Coffee Talk: Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

As I get older, I start to realize more and more that it’s OK to be different and that it’s never too late to make changes in your life to become the person you want to be. Today I am talking about how I conquer my fear of stepping out of my comfort zone. It’s really easy to fall into a trap and become someone that everyone else wants you to be. It’s also common for other people to want you to fit into a certain mold and be just like them. Well, here’s a quote that I like to live by: Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. It is something that I truly resonate with.

Anyone who has known me for a long time knows that I was always very shy and timid growing up. I grew up in a very strict household and wasn’t allowed to spend time with anybody outside of my family and relatives. I was always expected to bury my nose in a book and help out with chores and anything my parents needed. Because of my lack of social interaction, I was extremely shy around other people and it took me a very long time to come out of my shell.

So how did I finally learn how to come out of my shell? Unfortunately, it took a lot of pain and humility for me to grow into the person I am today. Since people viewed me as the “quiet girl” or the girl who was “too nice”, I was an easy target for others to take advantage of me. I was usually one of the youngest people in the workplace and was seen as the young grasshopper among people who had a much longer tenure than me. I felt disrespected many times because of my age and experience level. I had to continuously encourage myself to stand out by pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I would speak up more at meetings to make sure my voice was heard and began initiating ideas and resolutions to prove that I was a valuable asset to the company. I guess you can call this a blessing in disguise because it has helped me develop thicker skin and I feel more comfortable standing up for myself.

Stepping out of my comfort zone goes beyond the workplace. Although I am no longer working in the corporate world, my experiences have really help shape who I am personally. I have learned to become more confident and open to trying new things. Yes, there are still times when I don’t feel comfortable going up to a random person and striking up a conversation with them. However, I have come a very long way to be where I’m at today. Being able to share candid thoughts on my blog is also a huge step for me! I like sharing certain things so others are able to relate to me. I also noticed that I get more engagement through my blog and social media accounts when I discuss certain topics that some people choose not to talk about. It really means a lot to me when my writing has an impact on someone because it makes me feel like all the hard work that I pour into my blog is paying off. 🙂

The older I get, the more comfortable I am in my own skin. Stepping out of my comfort zone has gotten much easier.

I would have to say the same thing about myself as well! I learn through my experiences and get more comfortable and confident as I get older. 🙂

This is so lovely. It can be really hard to step out of our comfort zones. I am working through this in one area of my life right now as well. Some days I feel really brave, some days I don’t. It’s definitely a journey that requires us to be kind to ourselves, while still not settling for being what other people think we should be. Thank you so much for sharing your heart with us.

Yes, it gets better as we get older. I have learned to think that other people’s opinions don’t really matter and should not affect me unless those people are fully part of my life and my actions might affect them too…
    Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I agree! I should only focus on the opinions of those who matter to me most!
