Do you find it difficult to find balance between your work and personal life? Believe me, I know the feeling! When I worked a corporate job, there were times when I was home and I would randomly think about things that I had to do for work. I really didn’t like how these thoughts would creep in my mind when I should have just been relaxing. I’m sure a lot of you can relate. Work consumes so much of our lives and it can be extremely hard to find balance.
I would like to share some tips with you to help find that balance. These tips have greatly helped me and I hope they will help make improvements in your everyday life.
1. Get off your phone.
Seriously, get off your phone! I know most of us are way too attached to our phones, myself included! A couple years ago I decided to turn off all of my social media notifications and what a life changer it has been! I really don’t need to know the second someone comments on Facebook, likes my Instagram picture, etc. Seeing and hearing my phone go off so often not only became distracting but also annoying. I also don’t like checking my email a million times a day so I only make a point to check it a few times a day and stop checking it after a certain time. I know some of you have jobs where work doesn’t end when you leave the office. Realtors and lawyers can have clients emailing them at odd hours and it may feel like the work day never ends. Although I can’t fully relate to those professions, my suggestion is to set specific times to check and reply to emails. That way you won’t feel like you’re glued to your phone all day and night.
2. Schedule some fun time.
Whether you’re planning some “me” time or activities with friends and family, it’s so important to set aside some time for a little fun. You should treat these plans like work meetings. It’s crucial to show up and be on time. No one likes waiting around or getting flaked on. It’s definitely unprofessional in the business world so make sure you follow through with your plans, even if it’s “me” time for yourself.
3. Limit your conversations complaining about work.
Unless someone specifically asks you about work, try to limit how much you talk about it. Nothing is more annoying to me than when I’m catching up with someone over dinner and all they do is go on and on complaining about work. The negativity really is a buzz kill. Of course, I love hearing about positive things like promotions and awesome recognition but try to limit the negativity. For some, it may be therapeutic to let out the negative thoughts but make sure you steer your conversation in a positive direction and enjoy the time you’re spending with your friends and family.
4. Get lost in a book.
What I like about reading is that it helps captivate me away from where I’m at. Reading helps me explore my imagination and teaches me new things that I can apply to my own life. It also sometimes challenges me to think outside the box. I’m currently reading Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling. (Her first book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is one of my favorite books!)
5. Try something new.
Learn a new skill. Pick up a new hobby. Why not try to impress your friends and family by cooking some new dishes? Do something out of your comfort zone and you just might learn something new about yourself!
